Participatory Research Resource Library
The following resource library includes a curated set of materials to help you navigate the complex world of participatory research, a term we are using broadly to encompass all forms of research activity in which non-professional researchers are actively involved in some part of the research cycle. This might fall under the label of “citizen science”, “co-production”, “community-led research”, or you may use an entirely different term entirely.
These resource pages are managed University of Edinburgh’s Participatory Research Network, and the Library’s Involvement team. We review the pages quarterly, and are keen to expand the resource lists. If you have a resource in mind, please feel free to submit it for us to add to these pages:

Introductory Resources

Starting to use participatory methods in research can be quite intimidating and involve a steep learning curve. These resources are to help ease that transition, clarifying the basic skillsets needed, and outlining the various types of “involvement” you might choose to adopt.
Case Studies

The University of Edinburgh has been home to numerous examples of participatory research in every discipline, and there are many more examples to be found further afield. Browse through some case studies to learn by example, or to get some inspiration for your own work.
Access general resources offering guidance on inclusive practices, along with specific guidance for conducting participatory research with certain groups or communities.
Find guidance about working with participants and partners. This may include the creation of community agreements, co-budgeting and scheduling, or best practice when facilitating activities.
Explore the participatory research cycle, and the various ways of breaking it down. Consider how you might introduce participation into any stage: from data collection to co-authoring outputs.
The University of Edinburgh can be a complex institution to navigate, particularly when facing the added complexities that come from working with participants. Learn more about how to navigate these internal structures.
